Meet Graham — The Superhuman Evolved To Survive Car Accidents!

We’re always trying to push the limits, be it for skydiving, downhill skiing or car racing – it’s in our nature. However, our bodies are not designed to sustain heavy injuries or survive car accidents, which is why car crash fatalities are constantly on the rise. Have you ever wondered how our body should look like in order to survive car crashes? If you have, then meet Graham – an unsightly, crash-proof specimen which was designed to survive such accidents, and shows us how fragile our bodies are.

Graham was developed as a part of a new road safety campaign in Australia and was built by sculptor Patricia Piccinini specifically for this purpose. The hideous body highlights our body’s vulnerabilities – as the Transport Accident Commission in the State of Victoria explained, it was “designed with bodily features that might be present in humans if they had evolved to withstand the forces involved in [car] crashes.”

Graham, as you can see from the pictures, has a massive head with no neck, a flat face, stronger and thicker skin, fortified ribs, knees that flex in all directions and an extra leg joint that allows him to jump out of a moving car’s way. To put it simply, Graham can walk away from a collision easily.

“Graham helps us understand why we need to improve every aspect of our roads system to protect ourselves from our own mistakes,” Joe Calafiore, the chief executive of the campaign says. He explains that cars have evolved quicker than us, but our bodies are the same, which is why 1.25 million people died in road traffic accidents globally in 2013 only.

Graham will be on display at the State Library of Victoria until August 8, and TAC has set up a website where you can interact with him (
